Family of Egyptian opposition figure says he and his wife disappeared in Libya, GNU denies role in their alleged handover to Egypt

The Government of National Unity’s “Tebyan” platform denied reports circulating on social media claiming that the government was responsible for handing over a wanted Egyptian figure to Egyptian authorities.

The platform said checks and communication with relevant government bodies and entities operating under its authority had established that the reports were inaccurate.

The denial followed a statement by the family of Egyptian opposition figure Mahmoud Fathi and his wife, Huda Anwar, who reside in Turkey. The family said the couple had been abducted in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, on July 19, 2026, and were later transferred to Egypt aboard a private aircraft.

The family expressed concern for the couple’s safety and called on Libyan authorities to disclose the circumstances surrounding their detention and alleged handover, as well as the legal basis for the operation. It also urged Egyptian authorities to reveal their whereabouts and clarify their legal and health status.

The platform, meanwhile, called on media outlets and social media users to verify information and rely on official sources, warning against spreading unverified reports and rumors that could mislead the public.

The platform also stressed the need to address political and legal issues professionally and responsibly and to avoid speculation and inaccurate information in a way that preserves Libya’s relations and cooperation with its regional partners.
