Explosions and gunfire in Niger’s capital

Heavy gunfire and explosions were heard today in Niger’s capital, Niamey, near the international airport and the district where the Presidential Palace and other state institutions are located.

According to residents, the shooting began during the night at the airport, which is also a military base. Police and soldiers are deployed around the airport and in the district where government buildings are located.

Jihadist militant groups have attacked the airport twice this year.

The ruling military National Council for the Protection of the Fatherland (CNSP) has called on citizens to be united and cautious.

“Our defense and security forces have been mobilized to defend the homeland. Let us remain united, vigilant, and supportive,” the military council said in a Facebook post.

It is not yet known who shot and why.

State television RTN did not report what was happening even when it resumed broadcasting, which had been interrupted for several hours.
