Three people accused of being in possession of a smartwatch belonging to slain runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo made their second brief appearance before the Kempton Park magistrate’s court on Monday.

The trio, Kenneth Chibuzor, Stephen Mohlalakwane Sekhukhune and Danial Anthony Moat, face charges of theft, possession and disposal of the watch, as well as money laundering. Sekhukhune and Moat have been released on bail of R10,000 each, while Chibuzor remains behind bars.

The three men’s arrests are not related to Moselakgomo’s murder.

Here are some of the things that came out of the sitting on Monday:

  • Chibuzor’s case and that of his co-accused have been separated. He is back in court next week for a bail application.
  • He is said to have been the first of the three to be in possession of the watch. He remains in police custody, as his immigration status is yet to be obtained and verified.
  • It is alleged that he initially submitted an asylum application for immigration verification but withdrew it.
  • Chibuzor, a Nigerian national and shop owner in Kempton Park, is the guardian of a minor child who has been in a friend’s care since his arrest. Social services will be taking in the child.
  • Charges preferred against Chibuzor include; contravening the second-hand goods act, money laundering, theft, and being in possession of goods suspected of having been stolen.
