Egypt’s First Smart Lighting Factory Set to Begin Production in 2026

The USD 30 million facility will manufacture energy-efficient lighting systems for local and export markets.

Egypt’s first smart lighting manufacturing facility is set to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2026 as part of a USD 30 million project being developed by GILA Al Tawakol Electric in partnership with Signify.

The project was among the expansion plans reviewed during a meeting between Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem and representatives of GILA Al Tawakol Electric, focusing on smart lighting and renewable energy manufacturing.

Once operational, the factory will produce high-efficiency lighting systems with an initial local content rate of 40%, rising to 80% over time. Around 60% of production is earmarked for export to African and European markets, while the project is expected to generate approximately 1,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The discussions also covered efforts to expand renewable energy adoption across Egypt’s industrial sector. Hashem highlighted the Shams El Senaa (Industry Solar Initiative), which aims to install rooftop solar systems with a combined capacity of 1,000 MW across 7,000 factories during its first phase to reduce operating costs and improve industrial competitiveness.

According to GILA Al Tawakol Electric, the company has operated in Egypt for more than 50 years, with manufacturing facilities in 10th of Ramadan City and Obour City producing electrical equipment, lighting systems and energy-efficiency solutions.
