Egypt, Sierra Leone ink deal to strengthen pharmaceutical regulation

The Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) and Sierra Leone’s Pharmacy Board have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation in pharmaceutical regulation, capacity building and the exchange of technical expertise.

The agreement, signed by EDA Chairman Ali el-Ghamrawy and Sierra Leone Pharmacy Board Registrar and Secretary James Peter Komeh aims to enhance collaboration in drug registration, pharmaceutical inspections, and regulatory oversight.

El-Ghamrawy said the deal is part of Egypt’s efforts to expand partnerships with African regulatory bodies, promote regulatory harmonization and support access to safe, effective and high-quality medicines across the continent.

The memorandum also includes cooperation in training programs and workforce development to strengthen regulatory capabilities and improve institutional performance.

Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Egypt Sadiq Silla praised the Egyptian Drug Authority’s role in Africa and expressed his country’s keenness to expand Egyptian participation in its pharmaceutical market, while Komeh highlighted the importance of benefiting from Egypt’s expertise in regulation and capacity building.

The agreement supports Egypt’s broader strategy to position itself as a regional hub for pharmaceutical regulation and healthcare development in Africa.
