Egypt launches digital environmental impact assessment system

Egypt has launched the Integrated Digital Environmental Impact Assessment (IDEIA) platform to digitise the environmental assessment and approval process. The system was launched by Egypt’s Minister of Local Development and Environment, Manal Awad, and Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, Mohamed Farid Saleh, as part of the digital transformation component of the Green Sustainable Industry (GSI) programme.

The platform enables project developers and consulting firms to submit environmental studies and supporting data online, track the progress of applications, communicate with environmental specialists, and receive environmental approvals electronically. The Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) is responsible for reviewing applications through the system.

The IDEIA launch forms part of the GSI programme, which has an overall budget of EUR 271 million and is supported by Egypt, the European Investment Bank, the European Union, and the Agence Française de Développement. The programme aims to support the transition towards greener industry, including through improved environmental compliance and digitalisation of environmental processes.

The new system is intended to replace paper-based procedures with a more integrated process and improve coordination between the institutions involved in environmental approvals. Egyptian officials said the platform is expected to improve efficiency, transparency, and the speed of decision-making while facilitating investment procedures.
