Egypt eyes major agriculture and logistics projects in Tanzania
Egypt is seeking to expand its economic partnership with Tanzania through agricultural land reclamation, port development and new transport links, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced during an official visit to Dar es Salaam.
Speaking alongside Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Saturday, Sisi said the two countries had discussed launching a large-scale agricultural land reclamation project aimed at boosting food security and increasing the production of strategic crops, News.Az reports, citing Anadolu Agency.
“We discussed opportunities to launch an agricultural land reclamation project in Tanzania with the aim of achieving food security for both countries and meeting national needs for essential and strategic crops,” Sisi said. He added that the initiative could be expanded in stages before eventually supporting exports.
Beyond agriculture, Egypt also expressed interest in helping expand and modernize the Port of Dar es Salaam, with Sisi proposing that the project become part of a wider regional logistics network linking Tanzania with neighboring countries.
The Egyptian president also proposed establishing a shipping route between Egypt’s Safaga Port and Dar es Salaam, along with a multimodal transport corridor connecting Cairo and Tanzania through a series of joint infrastructure projects.
During the visit, Sisi emphasized the importance of cooperation among Nile Basin nations, expressing hope that Tanzania would continue playing a constructive role in promoting dialogue and mutual understanding on shared water resources.
The leaders also witnessed the signing of two memorandums of understanding covering cooperation in transport, electricity and renewable energy, following expanded bilateral talks.
Earlier in the day, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan praised the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project, which was built with Egyptian involvement. Sisi described the project as a successful example of development-focused cooperation between the two countries.
Egypt signed the contract to construct the 2,115-megawatt hydropower project in 2018, with work on filling the reservoir officially launched in 2022.
The visit also focused on strengthening business ties. More than 35 Egyptian companies and 120 Tanzanian business representatives participated in a bilateral business forum, where the two governments agreed to advance joint projects in agriculture, livestock, ports, logistics, railways and infrastructure.
According to Egyptian government figures, trade between Egypt and Tanzania reached $12.3 million during the first quarter of 2026, while Egyptian exports to Tanzania increased by 3.2% compared with the previous year.
Sisi’s trip marks another step in Cairo’s broader effort to deepen economic and strategic engagement across Africa while expanding cooperation with fellow Nile Basin countries.
