Egypt defeats Russia in a friendly match in preparation for the 2026 World Cup

Cairo, Egypt – The Egyptian national team secured a valuable 1-0 victory over their Russian counterparts in a friendly match held Thursday evening, as part of the Pharaohs’ preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

The match was held at Cairo International Stadium. This was part of the national team’s preparation program before traveling to the United States to participate in the upcoming World Cup.

Mustafa Zico scored the only goal of the match in the 65th minute. He rose to meet a perfect cross from Mohamed Hany, heading the ball powerfully into the Russian net.

This victory marks Egypt’s second win against Russia in their history. The Pharaohs previously secured their first victory in a friendly match, winning 2-1 in June 1991, with goals from Ahmed Ramzy and Hossam Hassan.

The Egyptian national team played 8 matches against the Russian national team, during which it managed to achieve victory twice, compared to 6 defeats.

The Egyptian national team is scheduled to depart for the United States next Saturday for their final friendly match against Brazil before the start of the World Cup.

Egypt is in Group G of the 2026 World Cup, along with Belgium, New Zealand and Iran.
