WANA (Aug 22) – Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, held a phone call on Saturday to discuss the latest regional developments and diplomatic efforts to ease tensions and pave the way for a return to negotiations.

 

According to a statement from Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, the two ministers discussed the need to restore the diplomatic track, including through the Iran-Oman talks and the resumption of implementation of the memorandum of understanding signed between Tehran and Washington on June 18, 2026.

 

The memorandum is intended to provide a framework for reaching a comprehensive and lasting agreement that addresses outstanding concerns and contributes to regional security and stability.

 

Abdelatty stressed the importance of intensifying ongoing diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and reach peaceful understandings that could help restore security and stability across the region.

 

He also emphasized the importance of ensuring freedom of international navigation and shipping, respecting the security and stability of the Arab Gulf states, and safeguarding the interests of all peoples in the region.

 

According to the Egyptian statement, Abdelatty also heard Araghchi’s assessment of the latest developments, the course of negotiations and the challenges facing the diplomatic process.
