Edouard Mendy retires from international duty after historic career with Senegal

Mendy made his senior debut for Senegal in 2018 under former manager Aliou Cisse.

Over the next eight years, he became a core pillar of the squad, earning 59 caps for his country.

His record on the pitch was remarkable: he conceded only 34 goals and kept an impressive 31 clean sheets, meaning he held opponents scoreless in more than half of his international matches.

The defining moment of his international career came during the 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

Mendy played a central role as Senegal defeated Egypt in a dramatic penalty shootout, securing the nation’s very first continental title.

Beyond his success in Africa, Mendy also represented Senegal on the biggest stage in global sports, playing at two FIFA World Cups- first in Qatar in 2022 and again at the 2026 tournament hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

His brilliant performances for both country and club earned him individual honours as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

In 2021, he was named Best Goalkeeper in Europe before picking up the Best Goalkeeper award at the AFCON tournament.

His extraordinary form was capped off when he won the prestigious Best FIFA Goalkeeper award at the 2022 ceremony.

Mendy leaves the international stage as a true icon who helped guide Senegal through one of the most successful eras in its footballing history.
