By Boris Esono Nwenfor

BUEA, PAV – The Chief Executive Officer of Ecobank Cameroon and CEMAC, Gwendoline Abunaw, has been appointed as a member of the Observer Research Foundation High-Level International Council on Green Transition (ORF).

The appointment places the Cameroonian banking executive among global leaders contributing to discussions on climate action, sustainable development and the future of inclusive economic growth.

The ORF High-Level International Council on Green Transition serves as a strategic platform focused on accelerating the global shift towards a greener economy through policy dialogue, climate finance mobilisation and collaboration among governments, businesses, experts and other stakeholders.

The Council is affiliated with the Observer Research Foundation, one of India’s leading public policy institutions, which engages with national and international decision-makers and contributes to global climate discussions, including the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP).

Abunaw’s appointment is seen as recognition of her growing role in promoting sustainable banking practices and advancing conversations around responsible finance in Africa. In this new position, the Ecobank executive is expected to help shape strategies to support a just and inclusive green transition, particularly by exploring ways to expand access to climate finance and encourage environmentally responsible investments.

The recognition also highlights Ecobank Group’s commitment to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles, sustainable finance and climate-smart investments across the continent. The group has increasingly positioned itself as a key player in supporting Africa’s economic transformation through responsible banking solutions, financial inclusion and initiatives that promote long-term development.

The ORF appointment adds to Gwendoline Abunaw’s growing list of leadership responsibilities at both national and international levels. It comes less than a year after her appointment to the Board of Directors of the National Investment Company of Cameroon (SNI), further underlining her influence in shaping economic and investment discussions in Cameroon and beyond.

The latest recognition places the Ecobnk Cameroon CEO among African business leaders contributing to global debates on sustainability and finance. With countries intensifying efforts to address climate change while pursuing economic growth, Abunaw’s new role is expected to provide a platform for amplifying Africa’s perspectives in the global green transition agenda.
