Eastern and western Libyan military agree on army unification steps
In the Libyan city of Sirte, representatives of the country’s eastern and western military commands agreed on practical steps to strengthen coordination between the forces as part of the process of unifying the armed forces. This was reported by Anadolu Agency, citing separate statements from the general staffs of both sides.
Plans for military branches
The agreements were reached during a meeting of the heads of the air forces, naval forces and air defense of both sides. Each military branch is to prepare a plan for implementing the agreed measures.
The plans provide for joint exercises and training, coordination of the modernization of weapons and equipment, and the exchange of spare parts and military supplies. The sides also plan cooperation between military academies and educational institutions.

The western military command stated that the talks should also help strengthen trust and remove obstacles to unifying Libya’s armed forces. New meetings between military departments and branch commands are expected in the coming days.
The current meeting took place after talks between Salah al-Din al-Namroush, chief of the general staff of western Libya, and his eastern counterpart Khaled Haftar, held on June 30 in Luanda and on July 12 in Sirte. The July meeting was attended by the 5+5 Joint Military Commission, the 3+3 Joint Security and Military Affairs Committee, and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.
Libya’s armed forces remain divided between forces associated with the internationally recognized Government of National Unity in the west of the country and forces led by Khalifa Haftar in the east. Representatives of both sides are holding UN-backed talks on unifying the army in line with the ceasefire agreement signed in Geneva in October 2020.
