WPBF 25 NEWS STARTS WITH BREAKING NEWS. BREAKING NEWS NOW AT FOUR. A MAGNITUDE 6.1 EARTHQUAKE JUST OFF THE WESTERN COAST OF CUBA. TREMORS FROM THE EARTHQUAKE WERE FELT HERE IN FLORIDA. FROM JACKSONVILLE TO TAMPA TO RIGHT HERE IN PALM BEACH COUNTY. CHECK THIS OUT. NEW VIDEO FROM ONE OF OUR VIEWERS IN LAKE WORTH BEACH. YOU HAVE TO LOOK CLOSELY. YOU CAN SEE MINOR SHAKING HERE RIGHT THERE. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US HERE AT FOUR. I’M TODD MCDERMOTT AND I’M TIFFANY KENNEY. LET’S GET RIGHT OVER TO CHIEF CERTIFIED METEOROLOGIST CHRIS MARTINEZ. BECAUSE, CHRIS, YOU’RE TAKING A CLOSER LOOK AT EXACTLY WHERE THIS HAPPENED AND WHETHER THERE’S A RISK FOR A TSUNAMI. YEAH, ABSOLUTELY. AGAIN, THAT IS THE MAIN CONCERN. ESPECIALLY WE GOT AN EARTHQUAKE AND A MAGNITUDE OF THAT LEVEL SO CLOSE TO SOUTH FLORIDA RIGHT NOW. YOU CAN SEE WHERE THE EPICENTER RIGHT HERE OFF THE COAST OF CUBA, THE WESTERN TIP 6.1, HAPPENED ABOUT 2 P.M. THIS AFTERNOON, CHECKING OUT WAVE HEIGHTS. AND THE GOOD NEWS IS FOR ALL OUR LOCAL AGENCIES, ESPECIALLY FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OUT OF MIAMI, SAYING THAT WE ARE NOT GOING TO BE FACING A TSUNAMI THREAT. IN FACT, AS WE TAKE A LOOK AT LIVE WAVE HEIGHTS AROUND THE STATE OF FLORIDA IN AND TOWARDS THE KEYS, WE DID FEEL A LITTLE BIT OF THOSE TREMORS. WAVE HEIGHTS ARE LOOKING GOOD ANYWHERE BETWEEN 1 TO 2FT. SO WE’RE NOT LOOKING AT INCREASED SEAS RIGHT OFF THE COAST OF CUBA, NOT LOOKING AT INCREASES AS WELL FROM THE MAGNITUDE 6.1 THAT HAPPENED THERE. SO AS WE’LL CONTINUE TO TRACK THIS, WE’LL ALSO CONTINUE TO SEE NO THREAT TO OUR AREA AS FAR AS THAT TSUNAMI THREAT IS CONCERNED, WHICH IS GOOD NEWS. MUCH MORE ON YOUR LOCAL FORECAST WHEN WE SEE YOU IN JUST A FEW MINUTES. ALL RIGHT, CHRIS, THANK YOU. AND LET’S DIVE INTO THIS BY NUMBERS. SINCE 1900, THERE HAVE BEEN 213 EARTHQUAKES OF MAGNITUDE 4.0 OR GREATER THAT HAVE STRUCK IN OR NEAR CUBA. MORE RECENTLY, SOME OF THE STRONGEST EARTHQUAKES AFFECTING CUBA INCLUDE A MAGNITUDE 6.8 EARTHQUAKE IN EASTERN CUBA THAT WAS BACK IN 2024. NOT TOO LONG AGO. A FEW YEARS EARLIER, IN JANUARY OF 2020, THERE WAS A 7.7 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE THAT IS THE STRONGEST EARTHQUAKE ON RECORD TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH CUBA.
