Earthquake strikes southern Tunisia, felt in Libyan border areas

Seismic monitoring stations of Tunisia’s National Institute of Meteorology recorded a 6.2-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale on Wednesday evening. The quake struck the Zarzis area in the southern governorate of Medenine and was felt by residents across the region, including several Libyan border areas.

In a statement, the institute said the earthquake occurred at 10:38 p.m., with preliminary analysis locating its epicenter at 33.42°N latitude and 10.59°E longitude. Earlier the same day, at 2:41 p.m., another 4.2-magnitude tremor was recorded in the same area.

Local sources in Libyan communities bordering Tunisia reported that residents felt the earthquake, though no initial reports of damage or injuries have been received.

The latest tremor follows a series of seismic events in the region over recent weeks. In June, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the central Mediterranean north of the Libyan coast.

Earlier last month, global seismic monitoring stations also detected a 4.3-magnitude earthquake at a depth of 10 kilometers northeast of the city of Misrata.
