Dutch Expat Finds a New Life in One of Colombia’s Hidden Gems
For many travelers, Colombia is a destination filled with vibrant cities, breathtaking landscapes, and rich cultural traditions. For Dutch expatriate Joep, however, the country became much more than a place to visit. And he made his home in Barichara, one of Colombia’s hidden gems.
After first arriving in Colombia during a backpacking trip in 2006, Joep and his partner discovered something they never expected: A deep connection not only with each other, but also with the country itself.
Years later, after spending time living in Medellin and Bogota, they found what they describe as their true treasure in Barichara, a colonial town in the department of Santander often regarded as one of Colombia’s most beautiful destinations.

“Some people say Barichara is the most beautiful little town in Colombia, and I say rightly so,” Joep explains.
Known for its cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings, and stunning mountain views, Barichara has become increasingly popular among both international visitors and foreign residents seeking a slower pace of life. Yet for Joep, the town’s appeal extends far beyond its postcard-perfect appearance.
With a professional interest in architecture and heritage, he was immediately drawn to the area’s historical character and authenticity. The traditional construction techniques preserved throughout the town offer a glimpse into Colombia’s past while maintaining a strong connection to local culture.
“The historical part and the authenticity really stood out to me,” he says. “I loved the traditional construction practices of the region.”
Barichara is also surrounded by opportunities for adventure and exploration. Visitors can hike ancient trails, including historic pathways that have connected communities for centuries, or enjoy outdoor activities ranging from nature walks to more extreme sports.
But Joep’s story is not simply about discovering a beautiful destination. It is also about creating a project that reflects his commitment to sustainability and environmental restoration.
It’s a life project
Over the last 15 years, he and his team have worked to regenerate and reforest land on the outskirts of Barichara. Their goal has been to restore native ecosystems while creating a space where visitors can reconnect with nature.
The project includes a rural camping area designed to offer peace and simplicity. Guests can choose their own campsite, gather around a communal bonfire, and enjoy outdoor facilities surrounded by natural landscapes.
“We are on the edge of Barichara in an area that still feels very rural,” Joep explains. “The most important thing is that it is a place in the middle of nature, very peaceful.”
As more foreigners look toward Colombia as a destination for relocation, retirement, or long-term travel, stories like Joep’s highlight a growing trend. Beyond the country’s major cities, smaller communities such as Barichara are attracting people who value authenticity, sustainability, and a closer connection to nature.
For Joep, the greatest reward is seeing visitors experience the same sense of peace that first inspired him years ago.
“I invite people to discover this place,” he says. “We have been working to restore nature so we can all enjoy a more harmonious environment. The most important thing is that it helps you reconnect with nature, and possibly with yourself too.”
In a world that often moves too fast, Barichara is one of Colombia’s true hidden gems and offers something increasingly rare: The chance to slow down, breathe deeply, and rediscover what truly matters.
