Duke dealt fresh blow as Uganda quits Invictus Games over ‘Harry-Meghan nonsense’

Prince Harry has been dealt a massive blow after a country announced it is quitting the Invictus Games. It has been revealed that Uganda has pulled out of the Games, stating that it will not participate in any event without King Charles’s approval.

The news comes two days after the King released a statement about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s current status. The King confirmed in a statement, released to avoid any confusion, that the couple are no longer working members of the Royal Family, despite their return to the UK last month.

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of the Ugandan president and head of the country’s armed forces, made the surprise announcement in a post on X.

He wrote: “In order not to be construed as being opposed to His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom, whom we deeply revere, Uganda hereby withdraws from the Invictus Games.

“We shall not participate in anything that does not have His Majesty’s approval.”

The Times then asked him about the decision to quit the Games, to which he replied, “I have factions in the Ministry of Defence that support that Harry-Meghan nonsense. I had to quash it straight away. I support the monarch. Period.”

Uganda’s stance comes just weeks after its defence minister appeared alongside the Duke of Sussex at an Invictus event in London to announce their entry to the Invictus Games.

The welcome to Uganda at the Games was announced at a ceremony at Chatham House in London on July 7.

Standing next to Harry, Kiryowa Kiwanuka, the defence minister, thanked the royal for welcoming him and credited President Museveni for his “visionary leadership” and Kainerugaba for “championing our team’s entry”.

He noted that their support “marks a new chapter for our service men and women”.
