Ambrey, a maritime security company, said that a ‘drone’ reportedly impacted a U.S. owned gas storage tanker in Egypt’s mediterranean port of Damietta on Wednesday. The firm cited an initial assessment.
Inchcape, a port services company, said in a separate statement that two gas tankers caught fire at Damietta.
Three trading sources who were familiar with the incident said that the drone ‘hit’ the floating storage tanker Energos Winter and caused a fire which spread to a second vessel Gaslog Salem. Two different security sources claimed that the drone was responsible for the explosion.
Ambrey stated that the crew had been evacuated, and the fire had been brought under control. He added that no party had claimed responsibility. (Reporting and editing by Alex Richardson, Jonathan Saul, Marwa Rashed and Mohamed Ezz)
