Dr. Ndubuisi Ekekwe, founder of Tekedia, has called for a stronger role for the Nigerian diaspora in driving wealth creation and economic development through the country’s capital markets.

Speaking at the NiDEC 2026 conference in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on August 12, Ekekwe delivered a keynote titled “Unlocking Diaspora Wealth Through Nigeria’s Capital Markets: Building a Globally Competitive Investment Gateway.”

His presentation examined Nigeria’s economic transformation across different decades, highlighting how the country moved from major banking reforms in the 1990s to the expansion of voice telephony in the 2000s, mobile internet in the 2010s and what he described as the emerging era of “application utility.”

A major focus of the keynote was the Investment and Securities Act (ISA) 2025, which Ekekwe identified as the most significant piece of business legislation in Nigeria in the last 30 years.

He compared the potential significance of the legislation to the United States’ Bayh-Dole Act, arguing that the ISA represents a shift in the foundational architecture of the economy by establishing clearer frameworks around property rights and the ability to unlock economic value.

Ekekwe also drew attention to assets that remain largely inactive, particularly family-inherited land. He argued that such assets can become productive capital when ownership is properly established and the assets can be recorded, leveraged and connected to investment opportunities.

For the diaspora, he presented an opportunity that goes beyond sending money home. Ekekwe described Nigerians abroad as “merchants of capital” who can play a central role in financing the next wave of industrial and technological advancement.

His argument was rooted in the broader relationship between capital, ownership and innovation. By creating systems that allow existing assets and new investments to participate more effectively in the formal economy, Nigeria can potentially expand the pool of capital available for businesses, technology and industrial development.

The keynote therefore positioned the Nigerian diaspora not simply as a source of remittances, but as a potential strategic investment community capable of connecting global capital with opportunities in Nigeria.

The latter part of the recorded session featured acknowledgements and formal recognition of dignitaries in attendance, bringing the keynote to a close.

Ekekwe’s presentation ultimately placed Nigeria’s capital markets at the center of a broader conversation about how the country can unlock dormant wealth, attract diaspora capital and build a more globally competitive investment gateway.
