The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has received 20 tonnes of medical and infection-control supplies from France to support efforts to contain the latest Ebola outbreak, with aid reaching Ituri Province, the area most affected by the epidemic.
The shipment arrived on July 7 after being coordinated by the Crisis and Support Center of France’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. The supplies are intended to strengthen the work of healthcare providers and humanitarian organisations responding to the outbreak.
The aid package includes 12 tonnes of equipment for infection prevention and control measures in the homes of people who have come into contact with infected individuals. The materials have been provided to French humanitarian organisation Solidarités International for use in field operations.
Another eight tonnes of medicines were delivered to French medical organisations ALIMA and Première Urgence Internationale to support local healthcare services and improve access to treatment for vulnerable populations.
France said the assistance will complement the efforts of local and regional health authorities, United Nations health teams and humanitarian partners working to limit the spread of the virus.
The French government thanked humanitarian organisations and the European Union for their support in responding to the outbreak under challenging conditions.
France also acknowledged the contribution of Association Tulipe, which donated medicines included in the emergency assistance package.
The latest delivery forms part of international efforts to strengthen healthcare capacity and support communities affected by Ebola in the DRC.
