DR Congo Ebola cases top 5,000 as death toll rises to 2,378

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has infected more than 5,000 people and killed nearly 2,400 since it began just over three months ago.

According to figures compiled by BNO News, the outbreak has resulted in 5,021 confirmed cases and 2,378 deaths in the DRC as of Monday, 94 days after the first case was reported.

The latest daily update includes 76 additional confirmed cases, 53 deaths and 21 recoveries compared to the previous day. The death rate among confirmed cases is about 47 percent.

The outbreak became the largest ever recorded in the DRC weeks ago, surpassing the 3,317 confirmed cases reported during the 2018-2020 Ebola outbreak in Kivu.

It has also become the second deadliest Ebola outbreak on record, surpassing the 2,287 deaths reported during the Kivu outbreak. Only the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic in West Africa was deadlier, killing 11,310 people across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The outbreak began in the Mongbwalu health zone in Ituri Province and has spread to six provinces, with Ituri remaining the epicenter.

Across all affected countries, 5,042 cases and 2,380 deaths have been reported. This includes 20 cases and two deaths in Uganda, as well as one case in France.
