Doumbouya’s Coalition Tightens Grip in Guinea’s Elections

In a crucial legislative victory, political parties allied with Guinea’s President Mamady Doumbouya secured a resounding majority, reinforcing his authority in the resource-rich nation. Electoral authorities reported Doumbouya’s coalition’s dominant performance in the bauxite-rich country.

The Generation for Modernity and Development coalition, along with its allies, captured at least 100 out of 147 seats and significantly outpaced rival groups, according to preliminary reports. This triumph fortifies Doumbouya’s leadership, previously established through a military takeover in 2021 and a contested presidential election win.

Despite a 52.87% voter turnout, the elections were marked by the absence of major opposition parties, formerly led by disbanded figures including Alpha Conde, Cellou Dalein Diallo, and Sidya Toure. Diallo, currently in exile, urged direct resistance against Doumbouya’s strengthened regime, as the country awaits the resolution of electoral disputes.
