Deported St Catherine man to stand trial for 2020 killing | News


A St Catherine man charged with the fatal stabbing of another man in 2020 is to stand trial in the on June 11, after a judge ruled he has a case to answer. 

The accused, Arion Beckford, otherwise called ‘Yaw Yaw’, is charged in connection with the death of 37-year-old labourer Jevaughn Powell of Old Road, Thompson Pen, Spanish Town in the parish. 

Parish Court Judge Courtney Maxwell made the ruling when the matter was mentioned on Wednesday. He will stand trial in the St Catherine Circuit Court. 

Beckford was granted bail in the sum of $400,000 with surety and ordered to report to the police in Clarendon.

It is alleged that on December 23, 2020, Beckford stabbed Powell during a dispute.

Powell was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Spanish Town police launched an investigation, and Beckford was later listed as a person of interest in the killing.

Police say he fled to the United States and was deported to Jamaica on March 7, 2025.

He is being represented by attorney-at-law Earl Hamilton.
