Cuba condemns US blockade extension through September 2027

HAVANA – The Cuban government on Tuesday condemned the United States’ decision to extend for another year economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba until September 2027.

“Cuba condemns in the strongest terms the extension for one more year of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the US government, a genocidal policy maintained against our people for more than six decades,” Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said on X.

Rodriguez said the renewal of the embargo until September 2027 “is not a minor administrative act”, but confirms what he called Washington’s continued aim to “suffocate an entire nation”.

He said the extension comes at what he described as the most difficult moment of the US offensive against Cuba in recent years, adding that “Cuba is not a threat,” while “the blockade is”.

The Cuban response followed US President Donald Trump’s decision to extend until Sept 14, 2027 certain authorities regarding Cuba under the Trading with the Enemy Act, one of the legal bases for US sanctions against the island.

The extension will continue to be implemented through the Cuban Assets Control Regulations, the administrative mechanism that sets financial restrictions on Cuba.

The authorities had been set to expire on Sept 14, and Trump’s decision extends them for another 12 months.

The move keeps in place one of the main legal foundations of US economic and financial restrictions on Cuba, amid a tightening of the Trump administration’s sanctions policy against Cuban officials and entities.
