Mpox, or Monkeypox remains active in the province of South Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Since the beginning of 2026, South Kivu has recorded 3,945 confirmed cases.
According to Justin Bengehya, head of the office in charge of health information and epidemiological surveillance at the Provincial Health Division (DPS) in South Kivu, Mpox continues to spread in the province and its fatality rate is low.
In a statement to the local press earlier this week, he indicated that Mpox remains present despite it having been declared no longer a current public health emergency in the DRC.
He specifies that 27 of the 34 health zones in South Kivu are affected by this disease and 3 deaths have been recorded since the beginning of the year.
According to him, the Nyangezi health zone remains the most affected in South Kivu with more than 1,000 confirmed cases.
