Colombia’s Jaminton Campaz Stays in U.S. After World Cup Amid Death Threats

Colombia soccer player Jaminton Campaz is not leaving the United States following the 2026 World Cup – not yet, anyway.

Colombia’s tournament ended Tuesday, with a Round of 16 loss to Switzerland. Campaz — who plays for Argentine club Rosario Central – missed a big scoring opportunity in extra time. Following the loss, he and his family received death threats.

“Football is also made up of difficult moments,” he wrote. “My Colombia, please let us never lose sight of respect. We may think differently or feel frustration and sadness, but no passion justifies hatred or living in fear.”

The Colombian Soccer Federation, meanwhile, released a statement on the hate going Campaz’s way.

Statement released on his situation

“The Colombian Football Federation (FCF) informs the public that it categorically rejects the threats against the life and integrity of Jaminton Campaz and his family , made after the match between the Colombian and Swiss national teams,” the statement reads.

“No athlete, nor any member of their entourage, should be subjected to intimidation for representing the country in a sporting setting.

“The Executive Committee of the Colombian Football Federation expresses its full solidarity and support for Jaminton Campaz, his family, all the players of the Colombian National Team, and the delegation in general. It also requests that the Attorney General’s Office expedite the necessary investigations to identify, prosecute, and punish those responsible for these acts.

“The FCF reiterates that the players who make up our national teams assume the honor of wearing the Colombian jersey with discipline, commitment, professionalism and a deep love for the country.

“Every time they enter the field of play, they do so with the conviction to give their maximum effort and with the sole purpose of representing the Nation with dignity and achieving the best possible result.

“Football should be a space for unity, respect, and hope, never a stage for hatred , intimidation, or violence. Therefore, the Colombian Football Federation (FCF) calls on all Colombians to ensure that the differences inherent in sporting competition never translate into threats or aggression against those who dedicate their lives to representing the country.”

Campaz has chosen to stay in the United States, rather than fly home to Colombia with his teammates, amid the scary situation.
