Colombia’s .co Domain Debuts its New Global Image at the ICANN

Colombia’s Ministry of Information and Communications Technologies (MinTIC) unveiled the new visual identity for the .co domain at the ICANN86 Policy Forum in Seville, Spain, the leading international forum on digital governance, organized by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). This transformation follows a public tender that awarded the operation to the Equipo PuntoCo Consortium, a partnership between the local firm Central Comercializadora de Internet SAS and the British company Team Internet Group PLC. Under the new model, the Colombian government’s share of the registry’s gross income jumps from 81% to 92%. These funds will be funneled into national connectivity initiatives and efforts to bridge the digital divide.

This renewal aims to enhance the commercial value of the .co domain, the country code top-level domain (gTLD) assigned exclusively to Colombia on the internet. Thiago Dal Toe, the coordinator for this area at the MinTIC, stated that the new branding embodies the entity’s strategic commitment to strengthening the international recognition of this asset. Currently, the market registers more than 3.5 million active .co domains worldwide, demonstrating the relevance of this extension in international technological environments.

ICANN coordinates the technical resources of the network

The Colombian delegation is attending the summit in Seville to verify that the administration of the domain meets global digital security standards. Ministerial representatives presented the technical management methodologies used to maintain the stability of the local infrastructure to the international organization. ICANN, the non-profit organization that coordinates the identifiers and numerical addresses of the global network, monitors the operational availability of the domain, which reached 100% during the last evaluation period.

A suffix with great commercial appeal

International corporations buy the geographic suffix because it perfectly mirrors the English abbreviations for “company” and “corporation.” This linguistic advantage serves as a key tool for foreign entrepreneurs, businesses, and projects seeking to build a reliable global online presence. The domain allows brands to project global authority and connect with diverse audiences through a universally recognized, intuitive name.

A prime example is the .tv domain. Originally a geographic top-level domain assigned to Tuvalu, it has become synonymous with television worldwide. Today, it serves as the premier choice for streaming platforms and digital creators, turning a piece of digital real estate into a major economic driver for the island nation.

The Google search engine classifies this extension as a generic domain, allowing web platforms to rank in any country without localization restrictions. This regulatory flexibility is driving the growth of digital initiatives in foreign markets, where companies find a wide availability of short names that are already exhausted in traditional extensions like .com.

Gerardo Aristizabal, legal representative of the operating consortium, explained that local specialists designed the brand in Colombia to showcase the country’s creative potential and rival the world’s leading digital brands.
