Cholita launches debut EP ‘Broken Promises’, features Popcaan for lead single

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaican recording artiste Cholita officially unveiled her debut extended play (EP), Broken Promises, on Friday evening during a launch event at Mezza Luna in Kingston, introducing a six-track project that explores heartbreak, healing and self-discovery.

The release marks a major milestone for the emerging singer, whose music has steadily gained traction both locally and overseas.

Anchoring the EP is Never Come Down, a collaboration with dancehall star Popcaan, while fellow deejay Skillibeng also makes a guest appearance on the project.

Speaking through six songs, Broken Promises chronicles the emotional aftermath of failed relationships, touching on betrayal, vulnerability and the resilience required to move forward. While rooted in dancehall, the project draws from contemporary R&B, pop, hip hop and Latin influences, creating a sound that reflects Cholita’s multicultural upbringing.

The EP was produced between Kingston and Los Angeles by Dre Skull, with the Popcaan-featured Never Come Down co-produced by Jonah Christian, whose production credits include Tems, Snoh Aalegra, J Balvin and Normani.

Born to a Jamaican father involved in the local music industry and a Peruvian mother with roots in Lima’s jazz scene, Cholita said her music is shaped by both cultures, blending Caribbean rhythms with international influences.

The launch comes as the singer continues to build momentum in the industry. She has already earned airplay on Zip FM, BBC Radio 1 and Hot 97, while also receiving support from Jamaican media outlets and international streaming playlists.

Her growing profile has also been recognised by the Caribbean Music Awards, where she has been nominated in the Best New Artiste category.

Although still early in her career, Cholita believes Broken Promises represents the clearest expression of her artistry to date. The project introduces listeners to an artiste unafraid to embrace vulnerability while remaining firmly grounded in Jamaica’s rich musical traditions, even as she looks to reach audiences well beyond the island’s shores.
