China Peak announces its mountain bike park will permanently close at the end of this season

China Peak Mountain Resort has announced that its mountain bike park will permanently close at the end of this season, marking a major shift in the resort’s offseason strategy.

Management did not provide a specific reason for the closure. However, the decision follows the late 2022 acquisition of China Peak by the California Mountain Resort Company. While the new ownership group has heavily invested in infrastructure—including new chairlifts and winter upgrades—the elimination of the bike park signals a clear pivoting away from downhill biking operations.

A Brief and Final Summer Calendar

Riders looking to get their final laps on the mountain will face a highly condensed schedule. China Peak’s bike park will only operate on select dates over the next few months:

• June 20–21

• July 4

• September 6

Despite the bare-bones calendar, the resort will still honor its commitments to the regional racing community. China Peak is scheduled to host two major competitive events before shutting down for good: the Southwest Downhill Series and the California Enduro Series.

Aside from mountain biking, China Peak will keep select summer activities alive. Visitors will still have access to scenic chairlift rides, as well as a variety of water sports and activities operating out of the resort’s lakeside boathouse.

The permanent closure will mark the end of one of Central California’s most notoriously technical lift-served trail networks.

Known for its raw, decomposed granite and steep, rocky terrain, the park offered 26 unique trails totaling 21 miles of ridable ground. Served entirely by Chair 1, the network’s longest and most famous route was Backside, a grueling 5-mile descent.

It was precisely this rugged, unforgiving terrain that made China Peak a favorite destination for high-profile races like the California Enduro Series over the years. With free, community-built trail networks expanding rapidly across the state, China Peak joins a growing list of ski resorts stepping away from high-liability bike parks to focus resources elsewhere.
