CAMERON, Mo. (KCTV) – Five people, including two children, were seriously injured in a four-vehicle chain-reaction crash on I-35.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 3:33 p.m. on Friday, May 22, about 2 miles south of Cameron.
Troopers say three vehicles – a 2015 Chrysler Town and Country, a 2017 Toyota Rav4 and a 2024 Kia Telluride – had stopped in the left lane due to traffic congestion.
That is when a 2015 Honda CR-V rear-ended the Chrysler, according to investigators. The impact pushed the Chrysler into the back of the Toyota, which then struck the Kia. The Chrysler was partially pushed into the median.
The Honda’s driver, a 19-year-old woman from Shawnee, Kansas, failed to stop for traffic ahead, Troopers say.
First responders note that five people were seriously injured and transported to Liberty Hospital:
- The 19-year-old Shawnee woman
- A 32-year-old female passenger in the Toyota
- A 45-year-old female passenger in the Chrysler
- A 16-year-old girl in the Chrysler
- A 12-year-old boy in the Chrysler
MSHP indicates that the other three drivers -a 45-year-old man from Indianola, Iowa (Chrysler), a 31-year-old man from West Des Moines, Iowa (Toyota), and a 41-year-old man from Urbandale, Iowa (Kia) – were not injured.
Investigators say they believe all occupants were wearing seatbelts, though it remains unclear whether the 19-year-old driver was buckled at the time of the crash.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
