Chevron has made a major oil and gas condensate discovery offshore Angola, with its latest exploration well encountering more than 2,000 feet of hydrocarbon column, boosting the company’s African exploration portfolio.
The discovery was made at the 105-4X exploration well in Block 0, operated by Chevron’s wholly owned subsidiary, Cabinda Gulf Oil Company Limited.
The well encountered more than 2,000 feet of oil and gas condensate column, including over 300 feet of net pay. Chevron described the reservoir quality as “excellent”, although it has not yet disclosed an estimate of recoverable resources or the potential production capacity.
“The early results are encouraging, and additional work will help determine the resource’s full potential and possible development opportunities,” said Kevin McLachlan, Chevron’s vice president of exploration, in the company’s official release.
The discovery strengthens Chevron’s position in the Lower Congo Basin, an established petroleum province where the company has operated for decades.

Chevron said it will now assess whether the discovery can be developed using nearby existing facilities. A tie-back to existing infrastructure could improve the economics and accelerate development compared with building a standalone offshore project.
The discovery also builds on recent activity in Block 0. Chevron’s South N’dola Platform delivered first oil in December 2025, just over two years after construction began.
The latest find is part of Chevron’s wider exploration push across Sub-Saharan Africa. The company currently produces about 300,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day net in the region and has expanded its position through new acreage and exploration successes, including in Nigeria.
Further exploration is planned in Namibia, Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea.
“Every successful well adds information, confidence and potential pathways for future growth,” McLachlan said.
For Chevron, the immediate challenge is to establish the full size and recoverability of the discovery. However, the combination of a large hydrocarbon column, substantial net pay and access to existing infrastructure gives the 105-4X find the potential to become an important addition to the company’s Angolan portfolio.
