Chesapeake’s Lauren Coughlin splits two Saturday matches, leaving Solheim Cup tied entering final day – The Virginian-Pilot

Chesapeake native Lauren Coughlin split a pair of matches Saturday, after which her United States team and Europe were tied at 8 heading into the final day of Solheim Cup competition in Cromvoirt, Netherlands.
The cup will be decided via 12 singles matches Sunday at the Bernardus Golf venue, including Coughlin against Ireland’s Leona Maguire at 6:46 a.m. Eastern time on the Golf Channel. Coughlin is ranked 17th in the world, while Maguire is 80th.
In morning foursomes (alternate-shot) play, Coughlin and Alison Lee won for the second consecutive day, dominating Englishwomen Charley Hull and Lottie Woad 6 and 5. The Europeans won the other three foursomes matches.
In afternoon fourballs (better-ball) competition, Coughlin and Megan Khang lost 2 and 1 to the Swedish pair of Maja Stark and Linn Grant, but the Americans won the other three matches.
The U.S. is 11-7-1 all-time in Solheim Cup play. The Americans would retain the cup in case of a 14-14 tie.

Langley Speedway card rained out
The stock car racing card planned for Langley Speedway in Hampton was rained out. Langley’s next planned races will be Oct. 3, the first of the year’s two championship nights.

Loar’s hat trick propels No. 1 CNU
Lindsey Loar scored a hat trick as Christopher Newport (4-0), playing its home opener and for the first time in 2026 as No. 1 in Division III, breezed past New Paltz of New York 7-0.
Caroline Hughlett added two goals, and Emma Weber and Riley Iasiello also scored as the Captains held a 51-0 advantage in shots.

Batten, William Paterson play to tie
Batten and William Paterson played to a 1-1 draw.
The host Marlins (0-0-3) went ahead 5:27 into the match on Ivan Polczynski’s goal, but the Pioneers (2-1-2) replied at 8:14 when John Witkowski scored. Batten’s Adrian Najarro made two saves, while Paterson’s Luca Misko made six.

No. 7 W&L shuts out No. 25 CNU
Washington and Lee (3-0), ranked seventh in Division III, won 1-0 at No. 25 Christopher Newport (2-1-1) behind Elizabeth Zimmerman’s goal 14:33 into the match. The Generals outshot the Captains 17-8.
Batten (3-0-1) and Stockton (1-0-3) played to a 0-0 draw in Virginia Beach. The Marlins’ Allie Greco made one save for a shutout, while the Ospreys’ Tori Vliet made seven.

Gilbert sets Norfolk State’s all-time kills record
Gabrielle Gilbert became Norfolk State’s all-time kills leader, though the Spartans (2-6) lost all three of their matches at UNC Wilmington’s round-robin event.
Friday, they fell to 3-1 (25-27, 25-16, 25-21, 25-21) to UNCW and then 3-1 (25-8, 14-25, 25-22, 25-19) to Harvard at Hanover Hall. Saturday, UNC Asheville swept Norfolk State 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-19).
Gilbert led NSU with seven kills. She entered the event with 1,176 career kills, one shy of the 1,177 Charlotte Armstead compiled from 2009-12. Gilbert had 38 kills for the three matches, giving her 1,214.
No. 22 CNU goes 2-1 in Paterson event
Christopher Newport (4-3), ranked 22nd in Division III, defeated Centenary of New Jersey 3-0 (25-19, 25-11, 25-21) to finish 2-1 at William Paterson’s round-robin event. Simara Alexander had 10 kills and three blocks and Lauren Hobbs had 20 assists for CNU.
Friday, William Smith defeated CNU 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-23), but the Captains recovered to beat William Paterson 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-17). Against Paterson, Jasmine Williams had 12 kills and five blocks, Fielding Croft had 23 assists and Emmy Carpenedo had 15 assists.
