Chapman Freeborn Provides ACMI Capacity for Air Zimbabwe’s Harare–London Gatwick Route – News and Statistics

Global air charter and leasing specialist Chapman Freeborn has supplied Air Zimbabwe with a custom ACMI capacity arrangement to facilitate the planned restart of direct scheduled passenger flights linking Harare and London Gatwick, which will provide belly space for time-critical exports.

The service is anticipated to resume before the end of July, restoring the connection between Zimbabwe and the UK after more than 14 years.

Spanish airline Plus Ultra will run the flights using an Airbus A330 under a long-term ACMI contract, with initial plans calling for three weekly rotations between Harare and London Gatwick. Under the ACMI model, Plus Ultra will furnish the aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance, while the flights will carry Air Zimbabwe’s flight code.

Chapman Freeborn offered the ACMI and contract management assistance required to develop the long-haul operational framework for the route, collaborating closely with the relevant teams throughout the effort.

The route is projected to offer belly capacity for time-sensitive exports, such as horticultural and perishable goods bound for the UK market.

Linas Dovydenas, president – IMEA at Chapman Freeborn, called this a major milestone for Air Zimbabwe and a key move in reestablishing direct links between Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom. He noted that across Africa, the firm sees rising demand for adaptable capacity options as carriers seek to rebuild networks, address passenger needs, and handle fleet operations more effectively. He added that ACMI can be vital in fostering that expansion, especially on strategic routes where speed, flexibility, and operational dependability are critical.

Daniel Huggins, director – ACMI & Leasing at Chapman Freeborn, stated that long-haul ACMI programs demand tight coordination among airlines, operators, aviation authorities, and commercial partners, covering everything from aircraft suitability and planning to regulatory compliance and operational preparedness. He indicated that in this instance, the team contributed from a capacity and contract management standpoint, aiding in assembling the appropriate framework for a strategically significant route. He remarked that this initiative shows how cooperative capacity solutions can enable airlines to revive key routes and reintroduce strategic services to the market.

In May, Chapman Freeborn broadened its critical freight portfolio by launching a next flight out (NFO) service aimed at time-sensitive industries.
