Co-hosts Canada secured their first-ever point at the FIFA World Cup after rallying from behind to draw 1-1 with Bosnia & Herzegovina on Friday night.
Fixture: Canada v Bosnia & Herzegovina
Score: 1-1
Goalscorers: Lukic (19′) / Larin (78′)
The Bosnians made their first World Cup appearance since the 2014 edition, although veteran striker Edin Dzeko was only named on the among the substitutes. As for the co-hosts, they opted to start Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies on the bench.
The Canadians took control from the early stages of the contest as they used the pace of Millar and Buchanan to cause some trouble down the left flank, while striker Jonathan David was very lively upfront despite missing a big chance.
The miss came back to haunt the home nation as Bonsia broke the deadlock after 22 minutes when Sead Kolasinac did well to glance a header into the path of Jovo Lukic, who nodded home from six-yards out with their first real attack of the contest.
Despite taking the lead against the run of play, Bosnia were quite happy to sit back and defend their lead for the remainder of the first half, as they did well to thwart every Canada attack in and around the 18-yard area.
The Canadians carried the dominance over to the second period as they went in search of the equaliser and they were nearly rewarded eight minutes when Richie Laryea weaved his way into the box before seeing his effort deflected onto the crossbar.
However, Jesse March’s side had to wait until the 78th minute for the equalising goal as substitute Cyle Larin managed to turn well in the box before volleying into the far corner two minutes after his introduction.
Bosnia’s decision to sit back early in the second certainly back-fired as they lacked any momentum going forward even after Canada restored parity , as the host nation looked the side more likely to get the winning goal, however they were thwarted at every attempt, with Larin seeing his close-range strike blocked in the box.
In the end, Canada pick up their first-ever point at a World Cup in front of their home supporters.
