Cameroonian Njoya Tikum Appointed UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Burkina Faso

The United Nations has appointed seasoned Cameroonian development expert Njoya Tikum as its new Resident Coordinator in Burkina Faso, entrusting him with one of the organization’s most critical leadership roles in the Sahel as the country grapples with humanitarian, security and development challenges.

The appointment, announced by the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, received the approval of the Government of Burkina Faso. Mr. Tikum officially assumed office on 18 July, and will simultaneously serve as the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator, placing him at the forefront of coordinating UN development, humanitarian and peacebuilding efforts in the country.

His appointment reflects growing recognition of African leadership within the United Nations system and comes at a time when Burkina Faso requires stronger coordination of international support amid complex humanitarian needs, governance challenges and efforts to build long-term resilience.

With nearly two decades of experience across the United Nations system, Tikum has established himself as one of Africa’s leading development professionals, earning recognition for his work in sustainable development, governance, peacebuilding, institutional reform, human rights and strategic partnerships. Throughout his career, he has worked extensively in fragile and transition environments, helping governments and institutions implement reforms while advancing integrated approaches to sustainable development.

Prior to his latest appointment, Tikum served as Director for West and Central Africa at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and concurrently as UNDP Resident Representative in Senegal, where he oversaw development programmes aimed at strengthening governance, economic transformation and resilience across the region.

Earlier, as Director for East and Southern Africa at the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, he spearheaded a major organizational transformation that significantly expanded UNV’s operations and impact across 23 African countries, reinforcing volunteerism as a catalyst for sustainable development.

His extensive UNDP career also includes serving as Regional Policy and Programme Advisor on Anti-Corruption and Economic Governance at the Regional Service Centre for Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He additionally held assignments in Liberia, South Sudan, the Regional Bureau for Africa, and the Bureau for Development Policy at UN headquarters in New York, contributing to governance reforms, institutional strengthening and development policy across multiple regions.

Before joining the United Nations, Tikum built an impressive legal career focused on public interest and human rights. He practiced as an attorney, served as a Human Rights Fellow at Columbia Law School, worked as a Legal Associate with the African Services Committee, and co-founded the Centre for Public Interest Law in Cameroon, underscoring a longstanding commitment to justice, accountability and the rule of law.

His academic credentials reflect an equally distinguished background. Tikum is a World Fellow at the Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs in the United States. He earned a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from Columbia University School of Law, another LL.M. in International Business Law from Central European University, and completed his legal studies with a Licence and Maîtrise en Droit from the University of Yaoundé II SOA.

As Resident Coordinator, Tikum will lead the UN Country Team in supporting Burkina Faso’s national development priorities while coordinating humanitarian assistance and fostering collaboration among UN agencies, international partners and the government. His dual role as Humanitarian Coordinator is expected to strengthen efforts to address urgent humanitarian needs while laying the foundation for sustainable peace and long-term development.

For Cameroon, his appointment represents another milestone in the country’s growing contribution to international leadership, with a Cameroonian professional now occupying one of the United Nations’ most influential field positions in one of Africa’s most strategically important regions.
