Cameroon Red Cross Provides CFA51.3 Million Cash Aid to 900 Households in Yagoua

The Cameroon Red Cross, with support from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), has distributed CFA51.3 million in cash assistance to 900 vulnerable households in Yagoua, Mayo-Danay Division, as part of efforts to address growing food insecurity in the Far North Region.

The financial support was handed over on June 2, 2026, targeting families facing severe socio-economic difficulties. Each household received CFA57,000 to cover essential needs including food, healthcare and children’s schooling. The operation is part of an ongoing humanitarian response to food insecurity affecting communities across the Far North.

The total amount disbursed represents a direct injection of CFA51.3 million into household spending. Beneficiary families are expected to use the funds to purchase basic goods and services from local markets, helping them meet immediate needs while supporting economic activity within the community. The intervention comes as humanitarian organisations continue to respond to the combined effects of insecurity, climate-related shocks and rising vulnerability in the region.

According to beneficiaries, the assistance is a timely support for households struggling to cope with daily expenses. The approach allows families to prioritise their most urgent needs while maintaining purchasing power in local markets.

The distribution takes place against a backdrop of persistent food-security challenges in Cameroon. According to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), nearly 2.9 million people in the country are projected to face crisis and emergency levels of food insecurity between June and August 2026, while more than 6.2 million people remain highly vulnerable to additional shocks. The organisation identifies the Far North among the regions most affected by food insecurity and humanitarian pressures.

Humanitarian agencies attribute the situation to a combination of conflict, displacement, climate shocks and economic pressures that continue to weaken livelihoods and food systems. The Far North has also faced recurring climate-related disruptions. According to WFP, floods that struck the region in 2024 affected more than 450,000 people, destroyed over 85,000 hectares of farmland and worsened food-security conditions in divisions including Mayo-Danay. Rising food prices and population displacement have further increased pressure on vulnerable households.

The IFRC’s 9.6 million CHF Emergency Appeal targets 330,000 people affected by severe food insecurity in the Far North, with multi-purpose cash assistance central to its approach. IFRC The World Food Programme has separately warned it requires USD 156 million to sustain life-saving operations in Cameroon through 2026.

The Yagoua cash-support operation is one of several interventions being deployed by humanitarian organisations to strengthen household resilience and help communities cope with the economic and social consequences of food insecurity. Through direct financial assistance, aid agencies seek to enable vulnerable families to meet immediate needs while preserving their capacity to recover from future shocks.
