CAF Champions League: Rangers survive Sobemap scare, advance to next round

Enugu Rangers have secured qualification to the next round of the CAF Champions League after overcoming Benin Republic champions AS Sobemap 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time in the second leg of their preliminary-round tie in Lomé on Friday.

The result saw the Flying Antelopes progress 6-5 on aggregate after both legs ended 2-2, with the Nigerian champions showing composure in the decisive penalty shootout to keep their continental campaign alive. Blueprint reports

The qualification comes after Rangers had been held to a 1-1 draw by Sobemap in the first leg at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta on September 6. Chidozie Iwundu had put Rangers ahead before Emmanuel Ali restored parity for the visitors shortly after the restart.

With the two sides level on aggregate after the return leg, the tie had to be settled through penalties, where Rangers eventually prevailed 5-4.
