Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has opened up on Teboho Mokoena’s suspension, which will keep him out of the national team’s crucial Group A match against South Korea.

An integral figure in the middle of the park for Bafana Bafana, Mokoena will have to watch the final group game from the sidelines after picking up a second yellow card, which rules him out for one match.

This leaves Broos in a bit of a pickle because of how important Mokoena has been for the team, not just at the World Cup, but over the last few years.

Mokoena scored the crucial goal from the penalty spot on Thursday to secure a point in a 1-1 draw with Czechia.

“It’s a pity that we got two yellow cards again. During a tournament, if you go through, we will have to pay that cash. It’s not the weakest players in our team. They are one of the best players in our team, so it’s something we have to solve. The problem is there, and we will try to do it,” Broos told the media in Atlanta after the match.

“Teboho has always been a very good player. He’s still a good player. In a game like that, sometimes it’s difficult to control your emotions, and it was…Can I say stupid yellow card? This is something we have to learn on that level. This is the thing with not so much experience, except on the continent in Africa. Except that, we don’t have a lot of experience. But we learn a lot, and again it would be good for the team to go to the second round, and then those things will disappear, I am very sure of it.”
