Brazil’s Port of Itajai Begins $12.8M Wreck Removal of 1893 Ship Pallas to Deepen Channel – News and Statistics

The Brazilian Port of Itajai has initiated a project to remove the wreck of a merchant vessel that has rested on the floor of a vital navigation channel for over 130 years. This effort, as reported by The Maritime Executive, is intended to enable the channel to be deepened, allowing larger ships to dock at the port.

Itajai, recognized as the second-largest container port in Brazil, has entered into an agreement with the University of Vale do Itajai (Univali) to conduct a technical assessment regarding the removal of the shipwreck of the Pallas. The Pallas was a merchant vessel that was wrecked in 1893 and continues to impede access to the port complex.

Historical records indicate that the Pallas was a merchant ship constructed in England during 1891 and was added to the Brazilian fleet in that same year. Throughout its brief service life, the ship carried passengers and supplies on routes between Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and Buenos Aires in Argentina.

Historians suggest that the captain of the Pallas scuttled the ship in October 1893 during the Federalist Revolution, aiming to prevent it from being captured by rebel forces. Its remains are now buried under sediment in the Itajai River, situated between buoys 9 and 11, close to the port’s Evolution Basin No. 2. Since being scuttled, the wreck has remained submerged in the port’s access channel for over a century, becoming a part of local maritime history.

As the Port of Itajai undertakes a significant modernization, the presence of the wreck presents a major hurdle to deepening the waterway, which restricts the expansion of the port’s operational capacity. The busy port processed 1.2 million tonnes of cargo in the first quarter of this year and seeks room for further growth. Consequently, removing the wreck has become critical to allow for dredging and the expansion of a large turning basin. The channel currently has a depth of 14 meters, but the plan is to increase it to 16 meters to accommodate larger vessels, keeping pace with the increasing size of modern ships.

Itajai states that, besides accommodating larger ships and improving port operations, removing the wreck is necessary to facilitate safe maneuvers, boost productivity, lower logistics costs, and enhance the competitiveness of the port complex. The estimated cost for removing the wreck is $12.8 million.

Artur Antunes Pereira, superintendent of the Port of Itajai, stated that the agreement represents more than the start of a technical study, symbolizing vision, boldness, resumption, and confidence in the port’s potential.

The wreck removal is part of a larger modernization project at the Port of Itajai financed by the federal government, with a total cost of $158.8 million over the next four years. This project also includes dredging the channel, reconfiguring the Navegantes jetty, and constructing a pier for cruise ships. The Port of Itajai operates under the supervision of the state-owned Santos Port Authority.
