Brazil’s second-quarter economic expansion lost momentum as expensive credit continued to restrain activity, although the outcome came in modestly above market projections, helped by a strong agricultural showing.

Gross domestic product in the region’s biggest economy advanced 0.5% in the April-to-June span versus the prior three months, according to statistics agency IBGE on Tuesday. That compared with a 1.1% rise in the first quarter and exceeded the 0.4% median estimate from a Reuters survey of economists. Year over year, GDP climbed 2.0% in the second quarter, also topping the anticipated 1.8% gain.

The latest figures reinforce signs of a deceleration as the central bank maintains a tight policy stance to fight inflation. Consumer prices were up 4.24% in mid-August, above the official 3% goal. Even though policymakers started reducing rates in March, the benchmark rate still stands at 14%, one of the highest globally when adjusted for inflation.

The release is set to draw scrutiny ahead of October’s presidential vote, where incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is running for a fourth non-consecutive term. Inters chief economist Rafaela Vitoria noted that without clearer pro-growth policy signals after the election and with borrowing costs staying elevated, the GDP slowdown could intensify in 2027.

Agriculture was the main driver in the second quarter, with output up 2.8% from the prior period, supported by bumper harvests of crops such as soybeans and coffee. Services inched up 0.2% and industry rose 0.1%, IBGE reported. Banco BV’s head economist Roberto Padovani cautioned that the farm sector’s boost is likely to fade in the third quarter, while the drag from restrictive monetary policy will keep spreading. He sees third-quarter growth of 0.2%, still positive but softer.
