Liberia’s newly established Global Methodist Church (GMC) has scored another major leadership victory on the denomination’s world stage, with L. Olando Boyce elected to the Finance, Administration, Pensions and Benefits Commission.

Boyce, who represents the Grain Coast Annual Conference of Liberia as Conference Lay Leader, dominated the election, securing 259 of the 289 votes cast—an overwhelming 89 percent of the total—during the GMC General Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa.

His decisive victory came shortly after the election of Liberian Rev. Dr. Jerry Kulah as a bishop within the GMC’s episcopal leadership, giving Liberia a second prominent voice in the denomination’s global governance.

Boyce’s election is particularly significant because he becomes the first layperson to serve on the Finance, Administration, Pensions and Benefits Commission since the founding of the global denomination.

Within the GMC, “laity” refers to church members who are not ordained as priests, pastors, deacons or bishops.

Boyce’s election places Liberia directly inside one of the GMC’s most consequential administrative bodies.

The Commission is responsible for promoting financial stewardship, integrity and transparency throughout the worldwide denomination. Its responsibilities include oversight of church finances, legal affairs, pensions, benefits and institutional record-keeping.

In his new capacity, Boyce will participate in decisions shaping the GMC’s financial and administrative operations.

His responsibilities will include helping to develop the church-wide budget, reviewing financial reports and participating in annual audits—giving Liberia a direct voice in the denomination’s financial governance and long-term institutional development.

The landslide nature of his victory also underscores the confidence placed in the Liberian lay leader by delegates to the global conference.

Boyce’s election represents Liberia’s second major leadership breakthrough within the GMC’s emerging global structures.

His victory follows Rev. Dr. Jerry Kulah’s election as bishop, a position that gives the Liberian church representation within the denomination’s episcopal leadership overseeing regions in Africa and parts of Europe and the Americas.

While Kulah’s election elevates Liberia’s presence at the episcopal level, Boyce’s election brings a lay perspective into the denomination’s highest financial and administrative decision-making structures.

Together, the two appointments give Liberia significant representation within the relatively young global Methodist denomination.

The two leadership victories come at a critical period as the GMC continues to establish and strengthen its institutional structures in Liberia and around the world.
