The Blues made two changes from the loss to Manchester United as Cole Palmer missed out through injury and was replaced by Romeo Lavia, while Trevor Chalobah earned a recall in defence.
Brighton got off to the perfect start when Jorrel Hato’s failed headed clearance landed perfectly for Ferdi Kadioglu, who unleashed a first-time strike that deflected off Wesley Fofana and sailed into the far corner.
It was one-way traffic in the opening 20 minutes as the Blues needed a fine save from Robert Sanchez to keep out Jan Paul van Hecke’s header, while Chalobah popped up with a goal-line clearance to deny Jack Hinshelwood.
The situation did not get better for Liam Rosenior’s charges in the latter stages of the first half, as they failed to carve out any serious openings in the Brighton box as the likes of Pedro Neto and Liam Delap did not get any joy in the final third.
Rosenior responded with a change at the start of the second half as Fofana made way for Alejandro Garnacho, who received widespread criticism for his display against his former team United over the weekend.
However, it was Brighton who doubled their lead ten minutes after the halftime break when Hinshelwood bagged his second league goal of the campaign with a composed finish after being played in by Georginio Rutter.
Garnacho did improve Chelsea’s attack down the left flank with some of his runs and he went close to pulling a goal back with 15 minutes remaining after surging into the box before sending a low strike inches wide of the upright.
However, the home side were able to round off the scoring in the 90th minute when substitute Danny Welbeck turned home Maxim De Cuyper’s low cross for his 13th goal of the season as Brighton leapfrog Chelsea into sixth spot.
