Blueberry crop in Morocco could increase nearly 70% by 2029

Morocco’s blueberry crop could increase by nearly 70% by 2029 from a base of approximately 85 tons in 2025, according to the IBO Global Blueberry Report 2026. The report identifies Morocco as the main source of projected supply growth across Southern Europe and North Africa.

In 2025, Morocco recorded 6.800 hectares planted, of which 5.800 hectares were bearing fruit. The crop reached 84.940 tons, up 18,4% from the previous year. The increase was driven mainly by additional bearing area rather than higher yields.

According to the IBO, approximately 14.940 additional tons came from hectares entering their bearing phase during 2025, while yield variation reduced the result by around 1.740 tons. Average yield stood at 14.645 kilos per hectare. Young and maturing plantings could contribute further volumes in the coming years.

Europe remains the main destination for Moroccan blueberries. In 2025, Spain received 43.110 tons and the United Kingdom 20.180 tons out of 82.590 tons of fresh blueberry exports recorded by the IBO. Together, the two markets accounted for approximately 77% of the reported volume. The report notes that these are trading partners and do not necessarily represent the final destination for consumption within Europe.

Weather affected availability during the 2025/26 season. Between November 2025 and January 2026, heavy rainfall and low temperatures delayed harvesting by up to three weeks in northern Morocco and around ten days in Agadir. Lower Moroccan availability coincided with a shorter Chilean season and delays in Spain and Portugal, resulting in tighter European supply and higher average prices for Moroccan fruit.

With Moroccan blueberry volumes forecast to increase, the timing and destination of shipments are expected to become a greater consideration for exporters as additional acreage enters its bearing phase.
