One of the nation’s top business and financial media outlets has once again ranked Binghamton University as the top public university in New York state.
The 2027 edition of Forbes’ annual America’s Top Colleges list has ranked Binghamton University as the #63 higher education institution in the United States (up five spots from the previous year). Binghamton is the top-ranked State University of New York (SUNY) school on the list. Forbes also lists Binghamton University as #31 in the Northeast and the #49 research university in the nation.
“I am extremely proud to see Binghamton listed among the top universities in the nation,” said President Anne D’Alleva. “The factors used in building these rankings reflect many of the University’s core values in emphasizing holistic student success and preparing students for rewarding and enriching careers. We know about Binghamton’s quality and excellence because we experience it and contribute to it each day and it is exciting to see our efforts validated nationally through these rankings.”
Binghamton University has also made Forbes’ national Top 25 Public Colleges list for the second straight year, ranking #19 among public institutions in the United States.
“As the top ranked school in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, Binghamton competes with elite private institutions across the Empire State,” Forbes said. “Through collaborations between the New Energy New York Battery Tech Hub and the NSF Regional Innovation Engine, university researchers are advancing sustainable battery manufacturing and recycling technologies. Binghamton recently broadened its computer science curriculum to include dedicated tracks in artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.”
To create the America’s Top Colleges list, Forbes evaluated thousands of colleges and universities in the United States using data from the government-run Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) to narrow down its list to around 1,600.
Forbes then narrowed the list down to its top 500 based on student educational and career outcomes. Its ranking uses data from 14 key metrics, such as overall return on investment, graduation rates, career success, and alumni salaries. The Top 25 Public Colleges list is a separate list that specifically looks at the best-ranked public institutions on their America’s Top Colleges ranking.
“Binghamton’s longstanding reputation for academic excellence is being bolstered by the continuous advancements made by our faculty and staff,” said Provost Donald Hall. “I’m encouraged by Forbes noting the NSF Regional Innovation Engine and new tracks in AI and cybersecurity as examples of the University’s commitment to research and scholarship. Our enduring efforts to expand what we do in all parts of the academic environment at Binghamton help us attract bright and talented students, faculty, and staff and improve in important national rankings.”
