Asaad al-Eidani says protecting the Kurdistan Region’s constitutional institutions is essential to preserving Iraq’s political and national stability.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Basra Governor Asaad Abdul Amir al-Eidani has condemned the recent drone attack targeting the private office of Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, saying the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region are inseparable from the security of Iraq as a whole.
In an official message addressed to Prime Minister Barzani on Tuesday, al-Eidani said the Kurdistan Region’s institutions represent the will of its people and form part of Iraq’s constitutional and political system.
“Any aggression against them is entirely unacceptable,” the governor said, stressing that attacks on the Region’s institutions threaten the stability of the country’s broader political order.
He added that protecting the Kurdistan Region, as a constitutional entity within Iraq, is essential to safeguarding the country’s overall security and stability.
Al-Eidani’s remarks came a day after two explosive drones targeted the private office of the Kurdistan Region prime minister and the residence of the director of the Parastin Agency in Pirmam, Erbil province.
The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate said the drones, identified as Hadid-110 types, were launched at about 12:28 a.m. Monday from across the Iranian border. No casualties were reported.
Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said an investigation by the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate had established that his personal office and the residence of the head of the Region’s Security and Intelligence Agency were targeted.
“I condemn these reckless and unacceptable attacks in the strongest terms,” Prime Minister Barzani said in a post on X, describing the incident as “a dangerous escalation and a direct threat to the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region.”
He also said the attacks would not deter his government from carrying out its responsibilities or protecting the people of the Region.
The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate likewise condemned the strikes, calling them “completely unacceptable” and saying those responsible would bear full responsibility for the consequences.
The attack has drawn political condemnation from outside the Kurdistan Region, including from al-Eidani, whose statement carries particular significance given Basra’s position as Iraq’s principal southern economic center and a major contributor to the country’s oil revenues.
His message also reflects a broader argument increasingly voiced by Iraqi officials and political figures: that attacks against Kurdistan Region institutions should be treated not as isolated regional incidents but as threats to Iraq’s constitutional order and national security.
The latest incident comes amid a series of drone attacks and interceptions involving Erbil. Kurdistan authorities have repeatedly warned that the Region’s territory and institutions are being exposed to growing security risks amid wider regional tensions.
For Baghdad and Iraq’s provinces, the response could become an important test of whether attacks against the Kurdistan Region are viewed as a matter of local security or as a challenge to the security of Iraq itself.
