Barranquilla to New York Without a Layover? Mayor Alex Char Announces New Direct Route
A new nonstop flight could soon connect Barranquilla directly with New York, potentially giving travelers from Colombia’s Caribbean coast a long-awaited way to reach the United States without changing planes. Mayor Alejandro Char announced the future route in Barranquilla, putting one of the city’s most anticipated international connections on the horizon.
The announcement came Aug. 27 during the 30th National Congress of the Colombian Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies, or ANATO, an event that brought together representatives from Colombia’s tourism and travel industry.
Char revealed the planned Barranquilla-New York connection while highlighting the city’s push to expand its international air network.
“Soon, Barranquilla-Nueva York,” Char said during the event, according to Colombian media reports.
The announcement immediately put New York among the destinations that could soon be reached directly from Barranquilla’s Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport.
For travelers, the attraction is straightforward: A nonstop flight would eliminate the need for a connection at another airport, potentially making the journey considerably more convenient.
Flight between Barranquilla and New York: A route travelers have been waiting for
New York is one of the most important destinations in the United States for Colombian travelers, with strong links involving tourism, business, education and family connections.
Yet passengers departing from Barranquilla currently cannot fly nonstop to New York. Existing itineraries require at least one connection, meaning travelers must change planes before reaching the New York area.
The future route could change that. Flight search services currently show no nonstop service between Barranquilla and New York, making Char’s announcement particularly significant for passengers who regularly make the journey.
A direct connection could also make Barranquilla more attractive to visitors from the New York metropolitan area, particularly Colombian Americans and other travelers with ties to the Caribbean region.
The big question: When will the flights begin?
Despite the excitement surrounding the announcement, several important details have not yet been revealed.
The airline that will operate the new Barranquilla-New York service has not been officially identified. There is also no confirmed launch date, published schedule, or announcement regarding which New York-area airport will receive the flights.
That means passengers cannot yet book the route. Local reports indicate that the city is working with an airline to make the service possible, with some reports suggesting that operations could begin in 2026 or 2027. However, no official start date has been confirmed.
For now, therefore, the announcement represents a future international connection rather than an operating flight.
New York is not the only new destination
Char’s announcement came as Barranquilla prepares for another major international expansion. Air Europa is scheduled to launch nonstop flights between Barranquilla and Madrid on Dec. 18, with three weekly services. The route will establish a direct connection between the Colombian Caribbean and Spain and could provide travelers with additional options for reaching Europe, according to reporting by Infobae.
The city’s broader strategy is to strengthen international connectivity and attract more visitors, investment and business opportunities.
The governor of Atlantico, Eduardo Verano de la Rosa, has also pointed to international markets such as New York, Madrid, Brazil, and Buenos Aires as important targets for improving connectivity.
Why a nonstop New York flight could matter
For passengers, the biggest advantage would be convenience. Instead of spending additional hours at a connecting airport, travelers could board in Barranquilla and remain on the same aircraft until reaching the New York area.
That could be particularly valuable for families traveling with children, older passengers, and business travelers who want to reduce the complications associated with connecting flights.
For the tourism industry, meanwhile, a direct Barranquilla-New York route could open the door to more visitors from one of the world’s largest metropolitan areas.
The announcement also reinforces Barranquilla’s ambition to become a stronger international aviation hub on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. But travelers will have to wait a little longer before making plans.
The airline, launch date, frequency, and New York airport are still to be announced. What is already clear, however, is that Barranquilla-New York nonstop service is now being pursued — and a trip that currently requires a layover could eventually become a direct flight from Colombia’s Caribbean coast to New York.
