Attack on Borno base repelled, four Nigerian soldiers injured

In Borno state in northeastern Nigeria, the military repelled an attack on a base in the town of Kukawa. According to Premium Times Nigeria, four servicemen sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the clash. They were evacuated by air for medical treatment; the injured personnel are in stable condition.

Night attack on the base

Mohammed Goni, spokesperson for the Operation Hadin Kai Joint Task Force, said the attack occurred at approximately 22:50 on August 28. The attackers targeted servicemen of the 101st Special Forces Battalion in Kukawa.

According to Goni, the unit used direct and indirect fire, after which the attackers retreated toward Cross Kauwa. He said several attackers were killed, while others sustained gunshot wounds during the retreat. Strikes on retreating attackers

According to the task force representative, the attackers attempted to leave the area on motorcycles, so aircraft were deployed to intercept them despite difficult weather conditions. Airstrikes on a group hiding under trees, according to the military’s assessment, killed about ten fighters.

Intelligence assets of the Multinational Joint Task Force later tracked approximately 20 motorcycles carrying attackers moving toward Tunbuns/Kangarwa. Goni said a second precision airstrike killed another 15 people and destroyed ten motorcycles. Ground troops also seized two motorcycles, ammunition and other items and, according to the spokesperson, killed one more attacker.

After the battle, the military received necessary combat equipment by air. Operation Hadin Kai said it continues to assess the outcome of the operation and conduct follow-up actions in the Kukawa area.
