Ukraine kills four people in Russia’s Bryansk and Kursk, as well as annexed Crimean Peninsula.

Russia has struck Kyiv after a three-day pause in attacks on the Ukrainian and Russian capitals expired, following a visit by two United States envoys that yielded no tangible progress towards ending the more than four-year war.

Ukraine’s air force said on Tuesday it had downed 142 drones, 31 of 32 cruise missiles, and two ballistic missiles launched by Russia. It did not disclose how many ballistic missiles had been used in the attack.

At least five people were killed and 30 others injured in the Russian air raids on Ukraine’s capital, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

He reported that the strikes caused damage in the city’s Darnytskyi, Holosiivskyi, Podilskyi, Shevchenkivskyi and Solomianskyi districts.

Drones hit buildings in Kyiv as well as in the Boryspil and Fastiv districts on the outskirts of the city, according to Ukraine’s emergency services.

In a separate strike, a Russian drone partially destroyed a Ukrainian TV channel building in Kyiv, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

‘Missiles speak louder’

Ukraine criticised Russia for launching attacks so soon after US President Donald Trump’s envoys – Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner – visited both countries’ capitals.

“The moment the US president’s peace envoys left, [President Vladimir] Putin launched another massive, horrific attack against Kyiv,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on social media, adding: “His ballistic missiles speak louder than his words on diplomacy.”

On Tuesday, Trump held a phone conversation with ⁠Putin, telling him that he wanted a swift end to the war in Ukraine, something that would allow US-Russia ⁠ties to be fully restored, the Kremlin said.

Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov told reporters that the pair had discussed the outcome of Witkoff and Kushner’s weekend visit – something he said both leaders had rated “with a plus sign” – and said that Putin had told Trump what he believed the US could do to help end the conflict.

Following the attacks in Ukraine, Russian regional Governor Roman Busargin said Ukrainian drones damaged civilian infrastructure in the city of Saratov, nearly 1,000km (621 miles) from Moscow, injuring several people.

At least two people were killed and one person injured in a Ukrainian attack on the Russia-annexed Crimean Peninsula, Moscow-appointed regional Governor Sergei Aksyonov said.

At least one person was killed in a drone attack on the village of Kalinovka in Russia’s Kursk region and another in the Bryansk region’s Starodub town, according to local officials.

Al Jazeera could not independently confirm the reports and there was no immediate comment from Ukraine.
