Asagba of Asaba advocates dredging, regional cooperation to revive River Niger economy

The Paramount Ruler of Asaba Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Prof. (SAN) Epiphany Azinge, has called on communities along the banks of River Niger to collaborate in harnessing the vast economic potential of the waterway for regional development and wealth creation.

The monarch made the call when a delegation from Osomala paid him a visit in Asaba.

The Asagba says River Niger is richly endowed with marine resources of immense economic value, adding that the river can serve as a major driver of economic growth if properly explored.

He expressed delight that the Federal Government was already taking steps towards developing the blue economy as part of efforts to diversify the nation’s economy.

The revered monarch lamented the decline of fishing activities in riverine communities, recalling that fishing was once a major occupation among people living along the coastline and river banks.

According to him, it had become difficult to find active fishermen in communities such as Asaba, Onitsha, Illah, Oko, Odekpe, Atani and Ogbaru, all strategically located along River Niger.

He advocated the dredging of River Niger to make the Onitsha Port fully functional and economically viable, urging coastal communities to work together to promote the blue economy and improve water transportation across the region.

The Asagba disclosed that Asaba Kingdom had already established committees focused on developing the blue economy and improving transportation systems, with the aim of creating wealth, reducing poverty and shaping a better future for the people.

He said greater success could be achieved if communities along River Niger embraced a common vision and encouraged traditional rulers in neighbouring communities to champion the initiative.

The monarch thanked the delegation for the visit, particularly the Odobor of Osomala Ancient Kingdom, Vincent Ndudi Ogbonnia, for fulfilling a promise made four years ago to visit the people of Idumu Ojei in Asaba, whose ancestors migrated from Osomala.

According to the Asagba, Asaba and Osomala share deep ancestral ties and cultural heritage, expressing optimism that the long-standing relationship between both communities will continue to grow stronger.

Chief Ogbonnia said the delegation visited Asaba to fraternise with their ancestral kinsmen and women at Idumu Ojei village, after first paying homage to the Asagba.

He reflected on the enduring historical connection between Osomala and Asaba and commended the Asagba for what he described as visionary leadership in promoting unity and development among the people of the kingdom.
