Angola Aims for 9,000 MW of Installed Electricity Capacity by 202…

Researched by IIR News Intelligence (Sugar Land, Texas)–Angola’s power sector is entering a major expansion phase, with the government targeting an increase in installed electricity generation capacity from approximately 6,400 megawatts to 9,000 megawatts by 2027, representing growth of around 40% within two years. Industrial Info Resources data show 96 capital power projects worth US$14.33 billion in Angola.

The strategy is being driven by rising electricity demand, rapid population growth, and the country’s broader objective of supporting industrial development and economic diversification. Officials estimate that Angola’s population is increasing by more than 1.5 million people annually, placing significant pressure on the national power system.

In addition to hydropower and other sources, Angola is investing in solar energy projects and grid infrastructure to improve electricity access and increase the share of renewable energy in the national generation mix. The government aims to raise the contribution of clean energy sources to more than 70% of total electricity production by 2027.

The planned capacity increase is also expected to strengthen Angola’s position as a regional energy hub in Southern Africa. Ongoing and planned transmission interconnections with neighboring countries, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Namibia, could enable future electricity exports and enhance regional power trade. As new generation projects and transmission networks come online, Angola is positioning itself to become one of the leading electricity producers in the region while improving domestic electrification and energy security.
