Analyst urges Juba to treat Canada’s consular withdrawal as a concern

Political analyst Dr. Abraham Kuol Nyuon is urging the South Sudanese government to take Canada’s temporary suspension of consular services in South Sudan as a concern and work to strengthen relations between the two countries.

Dr. Kuol was reacting to Canada’s decision to temporarily suspend consular services for Canadians in South Sudan and operate its embassy from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The changes took effect on July 13, 2026.

Speaking to Eye Radio in an exclusive interview, Dr. Kuol said the decision should concern the government because of Canada’s longstanding support for South Sudan.

“You know, as an African, every time your friends or your relatives refuse to be part of you, it becomes a point of concern,” Dr. Kuol said.

He urged the government to engage Canada and work to restore stronger relations.

“Canada’s withdrawal should be taken as a concern because those are the people who have been supporting us,” he said.

Dr. Kuol warned that continued deterioration in relations could have serious consequences and called for dialogue to prevent further tensions.

“The choice is either to choose peace or to choose conflict,” he said.

The analyst also highlighted Canada’s contribution to South Sudan during the country’s struggle for independence, urging the government to preserve the relationship and strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
